Unless you live alone on a secluded farm in the country, noise is likely to be an issue in your home or business from time to time.  But that doesn’t mean you have to just tolerate it all the time.  Soundproofing your walls can greatly reduce or even eliminate the noise that passes between rooms in your home or that enters your home from outside.  Even an apartment in the heart of the city with rowdy neighbors can be transformed into a quiet oasis with the right soundproofing.

At Drywall Victoria, we have years of experience in hanging walls that will keep the noise out.  Since the best soundproofing solutions are those that are installed behind or in conjunction with your drywall, we are the perfect choice for your soundproofing needs as well as your drywall needs.  Whether you are building a new home or looking to remodel an existing room, give us a call today to see how soundproofing can improve your quality of life!

Soundproofing for New Construction

For the most effective soundproofing, walls and ceilings should be soundproofed while they are being built.  If you are willing to undergo a massive remodel, many of these options can also be implemented in an existing home.  They will require stripping your walls down to the studs, however, so be prepared for a messy and time consuming process!

If you are still in the design phase of a building and want the absolute best soundproofing possible, a double stud wall is the way to go.  Unlike other options, these walls have the same load-bearing capabilities of other walls.  If you are building a media room in your new home, double stud walls will keep it nice and quiet while still allowing you to hang your television on the wall or your projector from the ceiling.

If design or budget do not allow for double stud walls, effective sound proofing can still be achieved by a clip and channel system.  By floating the interior wall, this system eliminates most of the vibrations that allow sound to pass into a room.  Double-layer
drywall installation joined with soundproofing glue effectively eliminates the rest of the noise.  The one drawback to this system is that heavy items cannot be hung from walls or ceilings that have been soundproofed in this manner.  If you use a clip and channel system to soundproof your media room, you will need to place your television on a free-standing stand - hanging it from the wall will likely bring the entire wall crashing down!

Soundproofing for Existing Rooms

Your home can still be effectively soundproofed even if it was built decades ago.  The most common method of soundproofing an existing home or building is to add a layer of soundproofing glue to the existing drywall, then add a second layer of drywall.  While not as effective as other solutions, this method provides a good amount of sound absorption without the need for a massive demolition project in an existing space.  It also gives your walls the same clean look they had before, and you can hang anything you want on the walls just as you could before they were soundproofed.

Soundproofing for Ceilings

Whether you live near an airport or in an apartment with noisy neighbors, soundproofing your ceiling can be an essential step in creating the comfortable, quiet space you want.

For ceilings with a floor above them, a double treatment is recommended.  Double layers of drywall joined with soundproofing glue are added to both the ceiling and the subfloor above, and a clip and channel system is also added to the ceiling side.  This provides the maximum absorption of both noise and footsteps from the floor above.

If there is no need to protect from impact noises from above, or if a double treatment is simply not possible (your upstairs neighbors might not be interested in letting you tear out their floors to protect your ears from their late-night dance parties!), soundproofing on the ceiling side only can still provide a good deal of sound absorption.  The same treatment is given to the ceiling of your room, but no changes are made to the floor above (if there is one).

Layers of drywall and soundproofing glue can also provide a level of soundproofing for ceilings just as they do for walls.  While not as effective as the above methods, this is the option that many property owners choose due to it being less expensive and much easier to install than other options.  If the walls are soundproofed as well and the outside noise is not excessive, even a couple layers of soundproofing glue and drywall can do much to maintain the peace and quiet of your space.

Your Choice for Soundproofing

Whatever your needs, you can trust us to install effective and appropriate soundproofing in your home or business.  We know that there is not one correct solution for every situation - everyone’s expectations and environments are different.  Our first step with each of our clients is to visit your property, discuss what you hope to accomplish, and evaluate what is possible in your unique space.  We will then present you with options, being completely honest about both the cost and effectiveness of each.

Once a solution has been decided on, you can rely on our experience and expertise to make your space not only quiet, but clean and attractive as well.  Soundproofed walls should not look any different than other walls - the only indication you should have that a room is soundproofed is the quiet, calm feeling you get when you walk into it.
