Insulation and Polyethylene Installation in Victoria, BC

While drywall provides the topmost layer that makes your walls look finished, much of the real work happens behind this outer facade.  Most of us understand the importance of insulation, but you may not be as familiar with polyethylene (often referred to as “poly” or plastic sheeting).

Both are essential steps in creating finished walls, however.  Don’t wait until you are in the drywall phase of your project to call us.  Let us handle your insulation and polyethylene needs as well!

What is Polyethylene?

We have all seen a glass of cold water condensate.  You probably understand that the condensation on your glass is caused by the temperature difference between the contents of the glass and the air outside it.  But did you know that the same thing can happen in your walls?  Temperature differences between the outside air and the inside air can cause moisture to accumulate on the studs and insulation inside your walls.  This can lead to mold growth or even rot in the framework of your home.

A properly installed layer of polyethylene can help to keep moisture where it belongs - inside your home and out of your insulation and framework.  Polyethylene is a thin but air-tight sheet of plastic that generally comes in 10’ wide rolls.  Proper installation depends on the climate in which the building is located and the materials the building is constructed from - the proper installation for a warm, dry climate would be completely wrong for our cooler climate and might even do more harm than good.

A properly installed polyethylene barrier can help prevent many long term problems, however.  By preventing the moisture inside your warm home from seeping into your walls, your insulation is free to do its job without fear of mold or decay.

Types of Insulation

It is common knowledge that insulation helps to maintain a desirable temperature in a building by reducing the movement of heat through the outer walls.  What may not be common knowledge is the different types of insulation available and the best ways to use and install them.

  • Blanket Insulation - Also known as batt and roll insulation, blanket insulation is probably the most well-known type of insulation.  It comes in large rolls the width of the space between normal studs, making it easy to unroll and secure between studs with minimal cutting.  Because of this, it is best used in walls, floors, and ceilings that are free of obstructions.  Blanket insulation is also the cheapest option on this list, which no doubt contributes to its being so widely used.

  • Loose-fill Insulation - Because it is installed by blowing or spraying it into place, loose-fill insulation is typically used in hard to reach crevices or remodeled areas of existing structures.  It can also be used in attics for its ability to cover large areas quickly and thoroughly.  Loose-fill insulation is typically made from recycled glass, paper, or other industrial waste, so it is an environmentally friendly option as well.

  • Spray Foam - One of the most effective but also most expensive types of insulation, spray foam can be used just about anywhere.  It is sprayed into place much like loose-fill insulation, so it can be used in new or existing walls, tight spaces, and around plumbing and electrical lines.

  • Reflective Insulation - While most insulation is designed to absorb heat or prevent its movement, reflective insulation does exactly what its name suggests - it reflects heat from the sun away from the building.  It is most commonly used in attics in warm climates, but does have its uses in cooler climates as well.

  • Foam Board - Usually reserved for unfinished walls, foam board comes in panels that can be cut to fit your needs.  Though not as effective as other types of insulation, it is perfect for basements, shop buildings, and other such locations where you do not want to go to the expense of finishing the walls to hide other types of insulation.
