Why Hiring a Professional Drywall Contractor Matters

The Importance of Professional Drywall Work

Drywall plays a critical role in the look, comfort, and durability of any interior space. While it may seem straightforward, drywall installation and finishing require precision, experience, and the right techniques to achieve a smooth and long lasting result. This is why hiring a professional drywall contractor truly matters.

From new construction to renovations and repairs, professional drywall services ensure quality workmanship, efficiency, and peace of mind.

Quality Workmanship and a Flawless Finish

One of the biggest advantages of hiring a professional drywall contractor is the quality of the final result. Professionals understand how to properly measure, cut, install, tape, and finish drywall so that walls and ceilings look smooth and seamless.

Small mistakes such as uneven joints, visible screw heads, or poor taping can become very noticeable once paint and lighting are applied. A professional contractor has the skills and experience to avoid these issues, delivering clean lines and a polished finish that enhances the overall appearance of your space.

           Proper Tools and Techniques

Drywall installation requires specialized tools and materials that most homeowners do not have readily available. Professional drywall contractors arrive fully equipped with the proper tools to complete the job efficiently and safely.

They also use proven techniques that ensure durability and structural integrity. This includes proper fastening, correct joint compound application, and appropriate sanding methods. These details may seem minor, but they make a major difference in how the drywall performs over time.

           Time Efficiency and Cost Savings

While some people attempt drywall work as a do it yourself project, it often takes significantly longer and can lead to costly mistakes. Hiring a professional drywall contractor saves time by completing the job efficiently and according to schedule.

Professionals know how to avoid material waste, reduce rework, and complete each stage correctly the first time. This can ultimately save money by preventing repairs, uneven surfaces, or the need to redo sections later on.

           Compliance With Building Standards

Professional drywall contractors are familiar with local building codes and construction standards. This is especially important for projects involving fire rated drywall, soundproofing, or moisture resistant materials.

Hiring a professional ensures that the drywall installation meets all required regulations, which can be critical for inspections, insurance purposes, and long term safety.

           Clean and Safe Job Site

Drywall work generates dust and debris that can quickly spread throughout a home or commercial space. Professional contractors take proper precautions to protect surrounding areas and maintain a clean job site.

They also follow safety practices when handling heavy sheets, working at heights, or using power tools. This reduces the risk of accidents and ensures a smoother renovation process.

Long Term Durability and Peace of Mind

A professionally installed drywall system is built to last. When drywall is properly installed and finished, it resists cracking, nail pops, and visible joint lines over time.

Hiring a professional drywall contractor gives you confidence that the work is done correctly and backed by experience. This peace of mind is especially valuable for homeowners, property managers, and businesses investing in long term improvements.

Choosing Quality for Long Term Performance

Hiring a professional drywall contractor is an investment in quality, efficiency, and durability. From flawless finishes to code compliance and long term performance, professional drywall services deliver results that are difficult to achieve otherwise. Whether you are building new, renovating, or repairing existing walls, choosing an experienced drywall contractor ensures your project is completed to the highest standard and enhances the overall value of your space.

When a Drywall Repair Is All You Need

Some issues look worse than they are, and don’t require a full replacement. Here are common cases where a quick repair does the trick:

✅ Small holes or dents from doorknobs, picture hooks, or furniture

✅ Nail pops (when fasteners push out of the wall over time)

✅ Hairline cracks along corners or joints

✅ Water stains (if the source of moisture has been fixed)

✅ Minor mold patches, caught early and in isolated areas

These repairs usually take a few hours and cost less than you’d think.

When It’s Time to Replace the Drywall

Some issues go deeper than the surface. If your drywall is compromised structurally or poses health risks, replacing the panel or section is often safer and more cost-effective long-term.

Here’s when we usually recommend replacement:

❌ Extensive water damage, especially if the board is sagging or soft

❌ Mold that has spread behind the wall or to insulation

❌ Large holes or tears too wide to patch without affecting the wall’s integrity

❌ Outdated or textured ceilings (like popcorn) you want to modernize

❌ Renovations that involve moving walls, doors, or electrical fixtures

If your drywall feels “spongy” to the touch or smells musty, it’s a sign that replacement may be needed.

What Affects the Cost of Drywall Work?

We get it. You want to know what it’s going to cost. While we can’t give you an exact number without seeing the job, here are the main things that influence drywall pricing in Victoria:

           1. Size of the Repair or Installation

A small patch in a hallway is very different from replacing an entire ceiling or finishing a basement. More square footage = more materials, more time, more cleanup.

           2. Condition of the Existing Wall

Is it a clean break or crumbling from moisture? Fixing poorly maintained drywall can involve extra steps, like cutting out damaged sections, treating mold, or reinforcing studs.

           3. Accessibility

Tight stairwells, high ceilings, or small condo units can make transporting sheets and working efficiently more challenging, which may slightly increase labour time.

4. The Finish You Want

Are you okay with a basic patch and paint, or do you want a flawless, invisible finish? Are you looking to remove a popcorn ceiling or install new smooth drywall throughout? The level of finish can impact prep time and sanding.

           5. Location Within the Home

Ceilings, corners, and bathroom walls often require extra care, especially when dealing with moisture barriers or tight angles.

Victoria-Specific Tip: Watch for Humidity Damage

Living on the Island has its perks, but all that coastal humidity can sneak into your walls. In older homes (especially in Fairfield, Oak Bay, or James Bay), it’s common to find drywall with hidden moisture damage from years of condensation. If your home feels damp or you notice peeling paint, it’s worth checking behind the wall before it becomes a bigger problem.

           DIY or Call a Pro?

You can handle some minor drywall repairs yourself — but here’s when it’s best to call a professional:

You see visible mold or water damage

The area is larger than 12 inches

The repair involves electrical outlets or plumbing

You want a perfectly smooth finish (no bumps, no uneven seams)

A good drywall repair is invisible. If you can spot where the work was done, it wasn’t done right.

Drywall Tools and Equipment Every DIYer Needs

Embarking on a do-it-yourself (DIY) drywall project can be both rewarding and challenging. Whether you're repairing a small hole or tackling a larger renovation, having the right tools and equipment is crucial for achieving professional-looking results. In this guide, we'll outline the essential drywall tools and equipment that every DIYer should have in their arsenal.

           Utility Knife

A sharp utility knife is indispensable for cutting drywall panels to size, scoring and snapping them along straight lines, and trimming edges with precision. Look for a retractable knife with a comfortable grip and replaceable blades for efficiency and safety.

           Taping Knife

Taping knives come in various sizes, but a 6-inch and 12-inch knife are essential for applying joint compound (mud) and smoothing tape during the taping and mudding process. Opt for stainless steel blades for durability and easy cleanup.

           Drywall Saw or Jab Saw

For cutting openings for electrical outlets, light switches, or plumbing fixtures, a drywall saw or jab saw is indispensable. These saws feature sharp teeth designed to cut through drywall cleanly and efficiently.

           Drywall Screw Gun

Driving screws into drywall by hand can be tedious and time-consuming. A drywall screw gun, specifically designed for this purpose, makes the task much faster and more effortless. Look for a screw gun with depth adjustment settings to ensure consistent screw depth without damaging the drywall surface.

           Drywall T-Square

A drywall T-square is essential for marking and cutting straight lines on drywall panels accurately. This L-shaped tool provides a straight edge for scoring and snapping panels cleanly along predetermined measurements.

           Mud Pan

A mud pan is a shallow, flat-bottomed container used for holding and mixing joint compound during the taping and mudding process. Choose a stainless steel or plastic mud pan with tapered sides for easy scooping and minimal waste.

           Sanding Block or Pole Sander

After applying joint compound, sanding is necessary to smooth out imperfections and achieve a seamless finish. A sanding block or pole sander fitted with fine-grit sandpaper is ideal for this task, ensuring smooth, uniform results without damaging the drywall surface.

           Corner Trowel

To achieve clean, crisp corners when taping and mudding inside corners, a corner trowel is indispensable. This specialized tool features a narrow blade designed to fit into tight spaces and create smooth, straight edges along corners.

           Drywall Lift (Optional)

For larger projects or ceiling installations, a drywall lift can be a game-changer. This mechanical device holds drywall panels in place, allowing a single person to lift and position panels accurately without assistance. While not essential for small-scale DIY projects, a drywall lift can significantly reduce strain and simplify the installation process for larger jobs.

With the right tools and equipment at your disposal, tackling a DIY drywall project becomes much more manageable and enjoyable. Whether you're patching a small hole or renovating an entire room, investing in high-quality tools designed specifically for drywall work will help you achieve professional-looking results and save time and frustration in the process. finishing and taping drywall

is a critical step in achieving smooth, seamless walls and ceilings in any construction or renovation project. While it may seem daunting to novice DIYers or even experienced contractors, mastering the art of drywall finishing and taping can significantly elevate the quality of your interior spaces. In this guide, we'll explore essential tips and techniques to help you achieve professional-grade results.

           Prepare the Surface

Before beginning the taping and finishing process, ensure that the drywall surface is clean, dry, and free of dust or debris. Use a drywall sander or sanding block to smooth out any rough patches or imperfections, and wipe down the surface with a damp cloth to remove excess dust.

Choose the Right Tools and Materials

Investing in high-quality tools and materials is essential for achieving professional results. Here are some essential items you'll need:

Drywall tape (paper or fiberglass mesh)

           Joint compound (mud)

           Drywall knives (4-inch, 6-inch, and 12-inch)

Corner tools (inside and outside corners)

           Sandpaper or sanding sponge

           Trowel or mud pan

           Apply the Tape

Start by applying drywall tape over the joints between the drywall panels. Paper tape is the traditional choice and is applied by embedding it into a thin layer of joint compound. Fiberglass mesh tape is another option, which is self-adhesive and requires less initial mud application.

           Feather the Edges

When applying joint compound over the tape, use a wide drywall knife to feather the edges and blend them seamlessly into the surrounding drywall. Apply multiple thin coats of mud, allowing each layer to dry completely before sanding and applying the next coat.

           Use the Right Techniques

Apply even pressure when smoothing out the joint compound to avoid creating ridges or bumps. Use long, smooth strokes with the drywall knife to achieve a uniform finish. For inside corners, use a corner tool to apply and feather the joint compound smoothly. For outside corners, apply a corner bead and use a corner tool or trowel to embed it into the joint compound.

           Sand Between Coats

After each coat of joint compound has dried, lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge to smooth out any imperfections or rough patches. Be careful not to sand too aggressively, as this can damage the drywall and create uneven surfaces.

           Prime and Paint

Once the final coat of joint compound has dried and been sanded smooth, it's time to prime the surface before painting. Primer helps seal the drywall and provides a smooth base for the paint to adhere to. Choose a high-quality primer suitable for drywall and allow it to dry completely before applying paint.

           Practice Patience

Drywall finishing and taping require patience and attention to detail. Rushing the process or applying too much joint compound can result in uneven surfaces and visible seams. Take your time and focus on achieving smooth, seamless results with each coat of mud and tape.

Mastering the art of drywall finishing and taping is essential for achieving professional-grade results in any construction or renovation project. Choosing the Right Drywall for Your Project: A Comprehensive Guide

When it comes to construction or renovation projects, selecting the right materials is crucial for ensuring the success and longevity of the endeavor. Drywall is a fundamental component of interior construction, serving as the canvas for paint, texture, and other finishes. Choosing the right type of drywall can impact not only the aesthetics but also the performance and durability of the finished space. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore key considerations to help you make an informed decision when selecting drywall for your project.

           Types of Drywall

           Standard Drywall (Regular Whiteboard):

Standard drywall, often referred to as regular whiteboard, is the most common type. It's suitable for a wide range of applications, including residential and commercial projects. It comes in various thicknesses, with 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch being the most prevalent. Standard drywall is versatile and cost-effective, making it a popular choice for interior walls and ceilings.

           Greenboard Drywall:

Greenboard drywall is moisture-resistant and specifically designed for areas with high humidity, such as bathrooms and kitchens. It has a green paper covering that provides increased resistance to mold and mildew. While it offers better protection against moisture than regular drywall, it is not suitable for wet areas like shower surrounds.

           Blueboard Drywall:

Blueboard drywall, also known as plaster baseboard, is designed for veneer plastering. It has a special paper surface that allows for better adherence of plaster, providing a smooth and durable finish. Blueboard is commonly used in commercial applications and areas where a more refined plaster finish is desired.

           Fire-Resistant Drywall:

Fire-resistant drywall is designed to slow down the spread of flames in the event of a fire. It comes in two main types: Type X, which is thicker and denser, and Type C, which incorporates additional additives for enhanced fire resistance. This type of drywall is commonly used in garages, utility rooms, and areas where building codes require fire-rated materials.

           Considerations for Choosing Drywall:

           Project Location:

Consider the specific location of your project. For wet areas like bathrooms, kitchens, or basements, moisture-resistant drywall such as greenboard may be a wise choice. In areas where fire resistance is crucial, opt for fire-resistant drywall.

           Budget:

Assess your budget constraints. Standard drywall is generally the most cost-effective option, but if specific features like moisture resistance or fire resistance are necessary, be prepared to allocate a higher budget.

           Intended Finish:

The type of finish you plan to apply to the drywall can influence your choice. Some drywall types, like blueboard, are specifically designed for plaster finishes, while others may be better suited for paint or texture applications.

           Building Codes and Regulations:

Familiarize yourself with local building codes and regulations. Some areas may have specific requirements for fire-resistant materials, especially in multi-family dwellings or commercial spaces.

           Installation Expertise:

           Drywall

is one of the most popular wall coverings available today. While there are many advantages that cause this popularity, its durability is not one of them. Drywall is much easier to damage than more archaic wall coverings like plaster or wood paneling - if you have lived in a home with drywall for very long, you have undoubtedly encountered a dent, crack, or even a significant hole.

Fortunately, drywall is also fairly easy to repair. The same mud-and-tape method that is used to hide joints between drywall sheets during installation is just as effective at concealing even the most extensive repairs. So when the inevitable hole is made in your walls, don’t fret. Here are a few basic drywall repair techniques that will make your walls look like new in no time:

Small Holes and Dents

When you remove a nail from a wall, it will always leave a small hole. Likewise, door handles, furniture, and energetic children are notorious for leaving small dings in drywall. These common issues are very simple to fix. All it takes is a little bit of patching compound!

If there is material sticking out from the wall, you can either trim it to be flush with the wall or use the handle of your putty knife to make a small dent in the wall. Then simply fill in the hole and/or dented area with self-priming patching compound, smooth it with a putty knife, and allow it to fully dry. After a few brushstrokes of paint, you won’t be able to tell there was ever a hole!

Cracks

Cracks appear in drywall for a variety of reasons. While some are a sign of more serious issues like foundation problems, most are caused by the normal expansion and contraction of wood framing. If the crack is open, it can be filled with patching compound just like a small hole. We then recommend coating the area with crack-repair spray to help the repair last as long as possible. Once the spray is fully dry, simply paint the area to match.

Large Holes

When accidents happen, they can leave large, unsightly holes in your walls. If the hole is larger than about ½” in diameter, patching compound alone will not solve the problem.

Holes less than 6” in diameter can be fixed using a self-adhesive mesh patch. Simply smooth the outer edges of the hole, attach the patch to the wall, and cover it with two or three layers of patching compound.

The largest holes will require new drywall to be cut and fitted into the hole. An area larger than the original hole may need to be removed from the wall so that the new drywall can be screwed into at least one stud (two studs, if possible). The process for these repairs is almost identical to the process for installing new drywall - once the drywall is secured, the edges are joined with layers of drywall compound and tape, sanded until smooth, and retextured to match the rest of the wall. If you want more information on this process, be sure to check out our blog post on The Basics of Drywall Installation!

Most of us have a basic understanding of what

           drywall

is. We are surrounded by it most of our lives, after all! When it comes to how those drywall walls got there, however, most people don’t know much. If you’ve ever been curious about the process of creating walls out of drywall, this guide is for you!

           Drywall installations

happen in two major steps: hanging and smoothing. Drywall is sold in large sheets that, while great for covering large areas quickly, will never exactly match the dimensions of a room. The very first task during a drywall installation is therefore to measure, plan, and cut the drywall sheets where needed to fit the wall. Cuts must be made not only for corners, windows, and doors, but also for electrical outlets, air vents, and any other openings you may need.

Once the drywall pieces are ready, it is time to secure them to the wall. Starting in one corner of the room, we apply drywall adhesive to the studs that will be covered by the first sheet. The drywall is lifted into place, pressed against the adhesive, then secured with drywall screws. Screws must be evenly spaced to prevent issues in the future, and the best practice is to start from the center of the drywall sheet and work out to the edges.

This process is continued, sheet by sheet, until the entire room (and ceiling, if needed) are covered. There will be small gaps between each sheet of drywall at this point - these are necessary to prevent cracks as the building expands and contracts.

We don’t want these gaps to be visible, however, which brings us to the next major step: smoothing! Creating a smooth, solid surface requires several coats of drywall compound (also known as “mud”) and tape. Each gap is filled with a thin layer of drywall mud, covered with drywall tape, then smoothed over with another layer of mud. These first two coats of drywall mud must be allowed to fully dry before the final layer can be added.

There will also be indentions where the screws that hold up the drywall are - these are also filled with drywall mud. Once everything is dry, a final coat of drywall mud is applied to the gaps between sheets and to any screws as needed. We then wait for everything to dry one final time.

The walls are now seamless, but they aren’t as smooth as they should be yet. There is one final step to get the drywall ready for painting - sanding. Using increasingly fine grits of sandpaper, we gently sand everywhere we applied drywall mud until it is smooth to the touch. After we have cleaned up the dust created by sanding, the drywall installation is complete and you are ready to paint!

Basic drywall installation is a straight-forward process, but to do it well requires technical skills and great attention to detail. For sturdy, seamless walls that perfectly accentuate your interior decor, call our drywall installation professionals for your next project!

Why You Should Consider Steel Framing For Building?

Why You Should Consider Steel Framing For Building

No one can downplay the importance of steel in the evolution and industrialization of the human race. Steel, readily abundant in different parts of the world, has played and is still playing a significant role among other earth metals in shaping the planet. Steel has helped produce cars, trains, ships, guns, machines, and spacecraft designed to explore the galaxy. In the area of construction, steel frames have formed the foundation for which most houses, airports, bridges, and other structures rely on strength. Its popularity among architects and engineers, especially when building tall structures has made many people debate its benefits when compared to other types of structural frames. Here are some of the benefits of steel frames in building construction.

           It Saves Time

With the current housing crisis the world is facing, every client wants their buildings to be done in record time without any reduction in quality. This increasing demand for fast high-quality buildings can be achieved by using steel framing. Steel framing is one of the few shortcuts to building a high-standard structure at a fast pace. With most of the steel frames already designed to specific shapes, sizes, and quality at the manufacturing plant, your task as an engineer is to fit those frames into the building plan on the site, reducing structural errors and saving time.

           Durability

Steel framing has the advantage over wood and concrete when it comes to the ability to stand the test of time. Steel frames, despite being lighter than concrete, are designed in such a way that it makes them stronger than concrete. Its components, an alloy of durable metals, make it more suitable for high-standard structures when compared with wood frames. Steel frames are also eco-friendly.

           Cost Effective

Economically, steel is the best material for building in the long run. Its price is currently low, making it the most cost-effective construction material. Steel possessing durable qualities reduces its maintenance cost over time, justifying every penny spent during the construction. Also, the fact that steel framing reduces construction time allows you to work within a smaller budget to produce high-standard structures.

           Resistance

Structural frames made of wood are highly vulnerable to pests and insects in the long run. They offer little resistance, making them unsuitable for high-quality, long-lasting buildings. On the other hand, steel framing is highly resistant to pests, and when treated or coated with zinc and anti-rust agents, it can also be highly resistant to moisture. Steel framing Victoria BC is one of the places where engineers source the best structural frames and other construction materials.

           Flexibility

Steel frames make it easy to achieve a particular design or shape in a building. The steel frame's ability to be molded into any shape and size during manufacturing and its durability and strength make it the most flexible material for building construction.

           Conclusion

Despite all the immense benefits of using steel framing, it has disadvantages. Some disadvantages include thermal and electrical conductivity and reduced flexibility on the building site.

in buildings today. Not all drywall is the same, however. For certain areas of a home or other building, special types of drywall should be used. This is especially true for high moisture areas like bathrooms.

Bathroom walls and ceilings do not frequently come into direct contact with water, but they are still exposed to high levels of moisture on a regular basis. Regular drywall is not recommended in bathrooms as it can easily absorb this moisture and mold or even disintegrate. Instead, bathroom walls should be constructed from drywall that is resistant to mold, mildew, and moisture.

The best product to use for bathroom walls is MMR drywall, also known as green board. Green board is infused with additives on both the inside and outside to make it moisture resistant, and its outer paper is coated with wax to help repel moisture. Blueboard is a great choice for areas of bathroom walls that will be covered in tile or other wall treatments because, in addition to being moisture resistant, it bonds well with adhesives. Mold resistant

Green board is not waterproof, however, and it cannot withstand heavy and prolonged exposure to moisture. For showers, backsplashes, or other areas that will come into direct contact with water on a regular basis, cement board should be used. Since cement board does not contain paper or any other organic materials, it will not mold and is considered waterproof. Cement board is also more expensive, heavier, and more difficult to install than other types of drywall, so it is often only used in areas where direct contact with water is likely.

Regardless of which drywall you use, it is always a good idea to use a waterproofing primer in your bathroom. These oil or latex based primers provide additional protection against mold and mildew, discouraging problems from ever reaching the drywall in the first place. Steps should also be taken to keep the moisture level in the bathroom to a minimum - installing and running a fan in the bathroom or simply cracking a window while you shower will help keep moisture levels under control, helping to prevent damage to your drywall (and everything else in the bathroom).

You spend a significant amount of time in your bathroom, and it is subject to more variances in climate than most other rooms in your home. Therefore, bathroom walls and ceilings deserve special treatment. Moisture resistant drywall may cost a little more than standard drywall, but the expense is well worth it to keep your walls mold-free and structurally sound. With the proper materials and a little bit of preventative maintenance, you can enjoy a relaxing bath knowing that there is nothing growing in or slowly rotting out your walls!

How Do You Install Drywall on a Ceiling?

Drywall’s use in a variety of applications is partially due to how easy it is to install. Being easy to install does not mean that you can hang it however you like, however. There are certain tried and true methods for hanging drywall that should be followed to ensure a long-lasting and durable installation. This is especially true when you are installing drywall on a ceiling.

The basic process for hanging drywall on a ceiling is the same as for hanging any other drywall. The fact that you are working above your head can complicate the issue, however, and there is no room for error as gravity is working hard to pull down the drywall you are installing.

The first step is to measure your ceiling and cut your drywall to size. Find and mark the ceiling joists, as well as any holes that will need to be cut for vents, ceiling fans, or light fixtures. You will not cut holes for these items until after the panels are hung, so note the exact distances that they are from the walls. When calculating where to cut your drywall, always measure to the center of a joist. Seams should always be placed along a joist, so two panels will need to be screwed into the joist anywhere a seam is required. If the room requires more than one row of drywall, plan your cuts so that the seams will be staggered.

Once you have planned, sized, and cut your drywall, it is time to secure it to the ceiling. Lift the first sheet of drywall into its place so you can see exactly what area it will cover, then apply adhesive to this area. Drywall adhesive dries quickly, so only apply enough adhesive for one panel at a time. Lift the drywall into place and use drywall screws to secure it to the joists. Place screws ½” to ⅜” from each edge and no more than 12” apart throughout the interior of each sheet.

We highly recommend having an assistant or two to help hold the drywall up while you screw it into place. If you must work alone, a drywall lift or T-brace should be used to hold the drywall in place while you secure it. Drywall lifts can be rented relatively inexpensively, and a T-brace can be easily constructed from two pieces of lumber.

Repeat this process until all panels are secured. Once all panels are hung, use the measurements you noted before you began to mark and cut out holes for vents and fixtures. These cuts are best made with a rotary cut-out saw or similar tool. Make the cuts as precise as possible to avoid having to patch unsightly holes after the fixtures are installed.

           How Is Drywall Made?

Drywall is one of the most common building materials in use today. While most of us live and work with drywall all around us, few of us know much about it. What exactly is drywall, and how is it made?

A mineral known as gypsum is the main ingredient in drywall. Though it is nearly 50% water, the water remains in a dry, crystalline form until it is heated past 100°C (which is the main reason that drywall is fire resistant). While you may not be familiar with gypsum by name, it is a component of many of the products you use every day. In addition to providing the core of drywall, gypsum is used as an ingredient in many toothpastes, an additive in bread (to increase the calcium content), a fertilizer, and a filler ingredient in cosmetics and paints.

The other important ingredient in drywall is paper. Paper forms the outside layers of a sheet of drywall, giving the gypsum a smooth and paintable outer surface. Much of the paper used for drywall today is made from recycled newspaper. For specialty types of drywall, additives are added to the paper to make it mold resistant, moisture resistant, or easier to plaster or paint.

Despite its many uses, the millions of tons of gypsum that are mined in North America each year are largely used to manufacture drywall. To create the inner layers of drywall sheets, gypsum is pulverized and mixed with water, starch, paper pulp, and other special additives to give certain drywalls certain properties. This mixture is then poured between two sheets of paper as they move through a special machine on a conveyor belt.

As the paper and gypsum mixture move through the machine, rollers compress the gypsum to the desired thickness. The machine then creates the desired edge on the sheets and wraps the front paper around to the back, sealing the gypsum mixture inside. Once the gypsum has solidified enough, the drywall is cut into sheets of the desired length.

Finally, the cut sheets of drywall pass through a drying oven. This oven starts out extremely hot and gradually decreases its temperature during the 35 to 45 minute drying process. Once dry and cool, the drywall is ready to be shipped out and

Over the years, the process of manufacturing drywall has improved and expanded. Drywall weighs less than it did fifty years ago, and specialty types of drywall are constantly being developed and improved to increase the performance and durability of the material. As long as drywall continues to be widely used, it will continue to be improved!

Drywall is made from some of the most widely used materials in our society today. Through a precise manufacturing process, it is transformed into one of the most recognizable building materials in use. Gypsum has been used to cover walls for thousands of years, and it isn’t going out of style any time soon!

           How Much Does Drywall Cost?

Before beginning any remodeling project, you should have a budget in mind and should estimate the cost of the project to be sure that you can accomplish the project with the amount of money you have available. When budgeting for a drywall project, there are several factors to consider.

First, decide if you will

           install the drywall

yourself or will hire a professional to install all or part of the job. If you will be doing all of the labor yourself, there is no monetary cost to factor into your budget (but do not forget that your time must be budgeted as well!). If you choose to hire a professional to do the work, $2 per square foot is a good average cost to use for preliminary budgeting. This can vary with the size and complexity of the job, however, so getting a quote before making any final decisions is highly recommended.

The next item to consider is the type of drywall you will be using. Drywall comes in several thicknesses and sizes, each of which is best suited for a certain application. A standard 8’ x 4’ sheet of drywall costs between $10 and $20, while a 16” square for small patches will cost around $5.

You will need a variety of supplies for your drywall project. Joint tape can cost anywhere from $1.75 to $15 per roll (though most rolls of tape are in the $3 to $5 range). Unmixed drywall compound (or “mud”, as it is more commonly known) should cost between $5 and $9, while premixed compound is closer to $15 for 5 gallons. The cost of fasteners varies widely based on the type and number of fasteners required for the type of installation to be done. If you do not already own the necessary tools to complete the job, you will need to include the cost of tools in your estimate as well.

So what do all these numbers mean for your project? Is there a simple calculation? Yes and no. First, measure the area that you plan to cover with drywall. If you are using standard sheets of drywall, one sheet will cover approximately 32 square feet (be sure to account for wastage due to corners, curves, or other non-standard items). If you plan to pay for professional installation, you can safely estimate paying between $40 and $60 per sheet of drywall for materials and labor for an average-sized job. Small jobs or jobs with intricate details could cost up to $150 per sheet.

If you plan to provide all the labor yourself, you only need to calculate the cost of materials. $20 to $30 per sheet of drywall is a great starting place for estimating the total cost of the drywall, fasteners, mud, and tape. As with any project, however, shopping around to get an idea of the current prices of materials and labor is always highly recommended before making any final decisions.

Should There Be a Gap Between Drywall and the Floor?

It might sound counter intuitive at first to leave space between your floor and your wall, but you should always leave a ½ inch to ⅝ inch gap between drywall and the floor. There are several reasons for this:

            Drywall absorbs moisture

. If drywall sits directly on a concrete floor, it will wick up any moisture that is present in the floor, either now or in the future. Wet drywall has the potential to rot and flake apart. It also provides an ideal space for mold to grow.

Many concrete floors are not perfectly level.

While the flooring that is laid down after the drywall is installed will correct imperfections in the floor, any small hill in the concrete will cause a full sheet of drywall to be out of level if the drywall is placed directly on the floor. If one sheet is out of level, large gaps can occur either between sheets or between the drywall and the ceiling.

Floors and walls both expand and contract as the weather changes

. If the drywall is sitting directly on the floor, they will put pressure on each other when they expand. This is likely to crack the drywall. Similarly, as a house settles, drywall that is in direct contact with the concrete slab can crack if it is pushed up as the house settles.

When

           installing drywall

, always hang the upper sheets first. Hold the drywall flush with the ceiling joint while you secure the sheet. Then install the lower sheets, lifting them up as close to the upper sheets as possible. While a gap between the drywall and the floor is desirable, gaps between sheets of drywall or between the ceiling and the drywall are unsightly and difficult to fill.

If holding the drywall off the ground while you screw it in is difficult, use thin pieces of wood or other filler material to hold the drywall off the ground while you secure it. You can also purchase a panel lifter that will lift a sheet of drywall to a desired height with a tap of your toe.

Basements are notorious for being damp and leaking. If you are installing drywall in a basement, leave a 1 inch gap between the floor and the drywall. It is also wise to add some type of waterproof filler material (such as plastic strips) between the floor and the drywall to help protect the drywall.

Installing drywall with at least a ½ inch gap between it and the floor will save you many headaches later on. While it may be easier to secure the lower sheets of drywall first while they rest on the ground, the potential for problems both immediately and in the long run far outweighs the ease of installation. Baseboards will cover the gap at the bottom of your wall; a huge crack through the center after your drywall expands in the summer is much harder to hide!
